A mobile locksmith works from a van rather than a shop, so they come to your home, business or vehicle. That's convenient, but it also means you're inviting someone you haven't met to work on your security. These questions help.

Questions to ask

  1. What's the price, and what could change it? A clear answer is a good sign.
  2. What's the business name? It should match the website and invoice.
  3. Do you work on this type of lock or vehicle? Not every locksmith programs every car key.
  4. What ID will you need? A professional will ask.
  5. Can you finish the job on site? Most rekeys, lockouts and many car keys can be done in one visit.
  6. Will I get an invoice? You should.

What a mobile locksmith can do on site

  • Open homes, offices and vehicles
  • Rekey and replace locks
  • Cut keys from codes or originals
  • Program many transponder keys and remotes
  • Install deadbolts, keypad locks and panic bars

When a shop or dealer might be better

Some high-security keys and certain vehicle keys can only be ordered through authorised dealers. A good mobile locksmith will tell you if that's the case rather than taking the job.
